Totentanz, Swarm Piper turns a pile of humble commons into an unstoppable infestation. Rather than fearing creature trades or removal, this Rakdos aggro engine weaponizes every death, constantly leaving behind aggressive Rat tokens while giving attacking rodents deathtouch to force disastrous combat choices for your opponents.
- Format & Rules: Pauper EDH (Uncommon Commander, 99 Commons, 30 Starting Life, 16 Commander Damage).
- Archetype: Rakdos Aggro / Rat Tribal / Aristocrat Token Swarm.
- Command Zone Strategy: Deploy Totentanz on curve to ensure every nontoken creature death replaces itself with a 1/1 Rat token. Pay two mana during combat to grant attacking Rats deathtouch, turning disposable tokens into lethal removal against opposing blockers.
The Core Engines
1. Death-Proof Board Presence
Because Totentanz triggers whenever he or any other nontoken creature you control dies, opposing removal and combat trades do not diminish your board size.
- The Engine: Fuel card-draw aristocrat staples like Deadly Dispute and Village Rites without losing board presence, and use “Feign Death” instants like Undying Evil or Supernatural Stamina to save your commander while generating an extra Rat token on the way back.
2. Deathtouch Combat Manipulation
While Totentanz's Rat tokens carry a “can't block” clause, his activated ability turns them into premier offensive threats. Opponents are forced to either let combat damage through or sacrifice their biggest, most expensive creatures to trade with disposable 1/1 tokens.
Top 5 High-Impact Staples
To flood the battlefield, disrupt opponent game plans, and assemble lethal board states, five standout common cards define the deck's primary lines:
- Rat Colony: Simple, brutal, and effective. Stacking multiple copies rapidly scales their power with every Rat on the board, and Totentanz guarantees a token remains behind whenever one falls in combat.
- Impact Tremors: The silent MVP of the build. As Totentanz repeatedly replaces dying creatures with new Rat tokens, Impact Tremors continually chips away at all three opponents' 30-life totals.
- Okiba-Gang Shinobi: The ultimate answer to control players. Ninjutsu this rogue through unblocked 1/1 Rat attackers to force an opponent to discard two cards out of nowhere.
- Graf Rats & Midnight Scavengers: A Pauper-legal Meld pair. When combined at the beginning of combat, they transform into Chittering Host—a massive 5/6 Eldrazi Horror with haste and menace that grants your entire board +1/+0 and menace to deliver an unblockable alpha strike.
Win Conditions & Payoffs
The Chittering Host Meld Overrun
Melding Graf Rats and Midnight Scavengers creates Chittering Host, giving your wide rat board menace and power buffs. Against a multiplayer table with only 30 life, a menace swarm easily pushes through lethal combat damage across multiple opponents simultaneously.
Non-Combat Token Burn
If the battlefield stalls into a ground standoff, passive enter-the-battlefield burn effects like Impact Tremors allow you to whittle down the table simply by trading creatures and casting cheap replacement bodies.
The Pilot's Roadmap
Early Game (Turns 1–2): Mulligan aggressively for 1- and 2-drop nontoken creatures. You must have bodies established on the board before casting Totentanz to ensure you can immediately start generating death triggers and Rat tokens.
Mid Game (Turns 3–5): Deploy Totentanz on curve. Attack aggressively into opposing boards, holding up two mana to threaten deathtouch on blocks. Sacrifice nontoken fodder to draw spells like Deadly Dispute while stacking Rat tokens.
Late Game (Turns 6+): Assemble the Graf Rats + Midnight Scavengers meld into Chittering Host, drop multiple Rat Colony threats, and swing with a menace-buffed army to wipe out the remaining life totals.
Format Analysis & Deck Verdict
- Strengths: Highly aggressive, resilient token swarm that easily recovers from spot removal and punishes defensive decks through forced deathtouch combat trades.
- Weaknesses: Vulnerable to cheap common mini-sweepers like Suffocating Fumes or Breath Weapon that can clear 1/1 tokens before they connect. Dependent on strong opening hands with early creature curve-outs.
- Budget Check: Builds out for roughly $85 on Star City Games, with the bulk of the cost tied directly to the Rat Colony package.
