Strategy & Deck Identity

Kardur, Doomscourge transforms opposing battlefields into weapons against each other. Operating as a Rakdos forced-combat control deck, this build forces every opponent into an endless war of attrition while passively siphoning life from every attacking creature that falls in battle.

  • Format & Rules: Pauper EDH (Uncommon Commander, 99 Commons, 30 Starting Life, 16 Commander Damage).
  • Archetype: Rakdos Control / Goad Politics / Combat Aristocrats.
  • Command Zone Strategy: Cast Kardur to goad the entire table, shielding yourself from combat for a full turn rotation. Whenever any attacking creature dies—yours or your opponents'—Kardur drains each opponent for one life and pads your life total.

The Core Engines

1. The "Feign Death" Re-Trigger Loop

To lock the table in permanent combat chaos, the deck abuses 1-mana instant recursion effects that return Kardur to the battlefield the instant he dies.

  • Key Pieces: Not Dead After All, Supernatural Stamina, Feign Death, Undying Malice
  • The Engine: When opponents target Kardur with removal or block him in combat, cast a 1-mana return instant. Kardur dies, snaps back to the battlefield immediately, and re-triggers his enter-the-battlefield goad effect to lock down another entire round of combat.

2. Self-Sacrifice Card Draw Engines

If opponents refuse to interact with Kardur to avoid triggering his recursion, you can trigger the loop manually while refilling your hand.

  • Key Pieces: Village Rites, Fanatical Offering, Corrupted Conviction
  • The Engine: Hold priority, cast a recursion instant targeting Kardur, and sacrifice him to a draw spell. You draw two cards, keep Kardur on board, and refresh the goad effect on demand.

Top 5 High-Impact Staples

To keep the board clear, protect your life total, and loop Kardur consistently, five premier commons form the core backbone of the deck:

Not Dead After All Creeping Bloodsucker
  • Not Dead After All: The top recursion instant in the format. For one black mana, it returns Kardur to the battlefield with a Wicked Role aura, refreshing the goad lock while providing extra damage pings upon leaving.
  • Creeping Bloodsucker: A silent MVP that drains each opponent for one life on your upkeep while gaining you life, widening the life gap while opponents batter each other.
  • Drown in Sorrow: A rare Pauper-legal sweeper that gives all creatures -2/-2 and scries, cleanly wiping out token swarms and utility dorks before Kardur lands.
  • Snuff Out: A zero-mana free removal instant that allows you to tap out completely for Kardur without leaving your defenses down.
  • Thorn of the Black Rose: Introduces the Monarch mechanic to draw extra cards every turn. Because Kardur prevents opponents from attacking you, you easily protect the crown while holding a 1/3 deathtouch blocker.

Win Conditions & Payoffs

Multiplayer Attrition & Forced Combat

Kardur turns the biggest aggressive threats at the table into your personal cleanup crew. As opponents throw their armies into each other, their life totals crumble from combat damage while Kardur's death-trigger ability drains them for every casualty. Once the dust settles and only one weakened opponent remains, finish them off with direct burn or an uncontested combat swing.

The Pilot's Roadmap

Early Game (Turns 1–3): Control the opening board with cheap spot removal like Cast Down and Defile, or wipe early utility dorks with Drown in Sorrow. Deploy setup pieces like Creeping Bloodsucker.

Mid Game (Turns 4–5): Cast Kardur once opposing boards have established attackers. Introduce the Monarch via Thorn of the Black Rose and hold open mana for 1-cost return spells like Not Dead After All or zero-mana interaction like Snuff Out.

Late Game (Turns 6+): Loop Kardur repeatedly using sacrifice spells and recursion instants to maintain the goad lock. Watch opposing life totals evaporate from combat clashes and Kardur's drain triggers before cleaning up the final player.

Format Analysis & Deck Verdict

  • Strengths: Complete political dominance in multiplayer. Neutralizes aggressive combat decks by redirecting their damage output while keeping your life total untouched.
  • Weaknesses: Vulnerable in the opening 3 turns before Kardur hits the battlefield, and requires active creature presence across opposing boards to maximize drain triggers.
  • Budget Check: Builds out for approximately $65 on Star City Games, offering one of the most controlling and interactive Rakdos experiences in Pauper EDH.
