Geist of Saint Traft - The Hexproof Aura Storm
Geist of Saint Traft
The Hexproof Aura Storm
High-Power Azorius Voltron & Asymmetrical Control (Bracket 3)
View Full Decklist on MoxfieldStrategy & Deck Identity
As one of only a handful of commanders with unconditional, flat-out hexproof at an average CMC of five mana, Geist of Saint Traft is an absolute steal at just three mana. Operating as an Azorius Aura Voltron powerhouse wrapped in a tight control shell, Geist hits the board early, shrugs off single-target removal, and immediately begins battering opponents both on the ground and in the air.
- Archetype: Azorius Voltron / Enchantress / Asymmetrical Board Control (Bracket 3)
- Command Zone Strategy: Deploy Geist on turn three, stack cheap card-drawing Auras directly onto his hexproof frame, and trigger his combat ability to spawn an attacking 4/4 flying Angel token every combat step.
The Core Engines
1. Combat Tax Evasion & Split Pressure
Geist's combat trigger creates a tapped and attacking 4/4 flying Angel token that offers massive tactical flexibility:
- Split Attack Targets: The Angel is not required to attack the same player or permanent as Geist. You can send Geist safely at an open player while directing the 4/4 Angel into opposing Planeswalkers, Battles, or higher-threat opponents.
- Bypassing Pillowfort Taxes: Because the Angel enters the battlefield already tapped and attacking, it completely bypasses attack taxes like Propaganda, Ghostly Prison, or Sphere of Safety without paying mana.
2. Lean Creature Suite & Aura Velocity
Because Geist is naturally immune to spot removal, the 99 runs only seven other creatures, focusing heavily on Aura card advantage and backup aura carriers.
- Key Support: Kor Spiritdancer, Danitha Capashen, Paragon, Pearl-Ear, Imperial Advisor, Snapcaster Mage
- The Engine: Cheap 1-to-2 mana auras like Staggering Insight, Curiosity, and Combat Research turn every swing into multiple fresh cards to keep counter-magic held open.
Win Conditions & Payoffs
The Indestructible Hexproof Fortress
While hexproof blanks spot removal, Geist must be shielded against sweepers and combat damage to close out games:
- Mithril Coat: Flash-attaches at instant speed to grant indestructibility, creating the ultimate unkillable Voltron commander alongside his natural hexproof.
- All That Glitters & Daybreak Coronet: Converts your dense enchantment count into massive commander power, lifelink, and vigilance to race the entire table.
Asymmetrical Board Wipes
Rather than running symmetric wraths that reset your own commander, the deck leans on custom board control that leaves your enchanted threats untouched.
- Winds of Rath: Destroys all creatures that aren't enchanted, clearing every opposing blocker while leaving Geist and his Auras fully intact.
- Single Combat & Promise of Loyalty: Forces players down to a single creature while locking opposing threats under vow counters.
- Cyclonic Rift: The ultimate blue finisher to bounce the entire table right before your attack step.
Secondary Army Swarm: Hallowed Haunting
- Hallowed Haunting + Copy Enchantment: Hitting the 7-enchantment threshold gives all your creatures flying and vigilance while creating scaling Spirit Cleric tokens with every aura cast. Cloning Hallowed Haunting with Copy Enchantment doubles your token generation and creates an instant go-wide win condition.
The Pilot's Roadmap
Early Game (Turns 1–3): Fix your Azorius mana and cast Geist of Saint Traft on curve. Deploy cheap cantrip auras like Combat Research to begin drawing cards on your first attack.
Mid Game (Turns 4–6): Protect Geist from sweepers by tutoring Mithril Coat via Enlightened Tutor, or hold up efficient interaction like Swan Song, Render Silent, and Hindering Light. Deploy one-sided sweepers like Winds of Rath to clear blockers.
Late Game (Turns 7+): Stack power multipliers like All That Glitters or Daybreak Coronet to knock out players with lethal commander damage, or overrun the table with a swarm of flying Spirit Clerics via Hallowed Haunting.
Pod Performance & Meta Review
- Multiplayer Pod Win Rate: >40% across Bracket 3 games at our local table, proving exceptionally difficult to interact with once his protection and draw loops are established.
- Vulnerabilities & Sideboard: With only eight total creatures, early counter-spells on Geist can slow down momentum. A dedicated sideboard of evasive targets (such as Invisible Stalker and Hero of Iroas) is kept ready for heavy-control pods.
- Community Build Contrast: Many online lists take Geist in an expensive Equipment Voltron direction (relying on Stoneforge Mystic and the Swords of X & Y cycle) or full Azorius Tap-Out Control. This build opts for high-velocity Aura synergy, leveraging cheap card draw and asymmetric sweepers to maintain relentless pressure.
